INTERNET PHONE: FREE LONG DISTANCE (ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD) TELEPHONE CALL BY SKYPE.

1. EQUIPMENT:

You need:
- 1.1. A Pentium 4 PC with High Speed Internet

- 1.2. Either a unit of Head phone and Microphone (See Photo B)
or
A Microphone (See Photo A) to talk and the Computer speakers that you listen to music (if you don’t have them yet, make sure you get them!)

You can buy Head phone with microphone set or just the PC microphone at a computer/electronic store for a few dollars!





2. DOWN LOADING SKYPE:

Go to "http://www.skype.com/">http://www.skype.com

to down load the free skypeSetup.exe software then install it

Follow the instructions from Skype. Make sure to copy down in a notebook (For Future reference) whatever you provide in the form, eg:

- Your Full Name
- Your Password
- Your Email address
- Your code name you want to appear on your friend’s computer (For example, I use my code name as damtrungphan for Skype Internet phone service).

After all these steps are completed, click at LAUCNH SKYPE, then Click OK
You will see the SKYPE Icon on the Computer Window by now

3 TO ADD YOUR FRIENDS’ NAMES TO THE LIST OF CALLERS:

Your friends should also down load and install the SKYPE’s software and they should have a headphone + microphone as mentioned in step 1 above. Remember that this Telephone service is through Internet ie people talking to each other through Internet only!


- Click at SKYPE Icon on your Monitor, you’ll see a window named
SKYPE

- Click at the + sign (inside the green circle), you’ll see a window named
Skype Add a contact
In the empty space under “Enter the skype name”, type your friend’s code name (I use my code name as damtrungphan for my main PC.)- Click NEXT (This will allow your friend to see when you are online – Your friend will see your code name on his/her SKYPE window and will accept you in his/her contact list) – You can continue to add more names, otherwise, click FINISH

4 CONNECTING YOUR EQUIPMENTS

a. Using Head phone and Microphone Unit (See Photo B above), make sure to connect the terminals of the unit properly to the Computer: the RED terminal is for the Microphone and the WHITE terminal is for the Head phone – Wear this Unit around your ears before making a phone call.

b. Using the USB Microphone unit (See Photo A above), connect the USB terminal to one of the USB slots of your PC. I prefer this Microphone unit option because of the following advantages:

1/- I don’t have to disconnect the PC speakers every time I make a phone call,
2/- I don’t have to wear the headphone around my ears yet I can talk to (through the microphone a few feet away from me) and I can listen to the caller’s voice through the speakers (a few feet away) very loud and clear. Also my wife can listen and talk to the caller at the same time (that is, if the caller is not one of my “internet girl friends” or someone like that! Hee hee)!
3/- It is much easier to connect the Microphone to a USB slot of the computer compared to the round slot which is located at the back of the PC (hard access at times) – It also provides better voice to the listener at the other end.

5 HOW TO MAKE AN INTERNET PHONE CALL BY USING SKYPE’S FACILITY:

- Wear the headphone (if you choose option 4.1 above) – If you choose the USB Microphone Unit, you don’t have to wear anything.
- Click at the SKYPE ICON, you’ll see all your friend’s code name. Double click at your friend’s code name, you will hear the internet phone ringing. and you also see the message “Calling XYZ , ringing” in the Skype window. If your friend is at the computer at that moment, he/she will click at the Green Telephone sign to talk to you

- (Note: you might not be able to talk to them right away as they might not have installed Skype software and/or they might not have installed the equipments to receive your call yet. It could also mean that your Skype facilities are not properly installed, so you have to check your system again!)

- However, you can test your system by adding my name (damtrungphan) as a contact person in your list but please email me at
- phandam99@yahoo.com first so that I will add your name to my contact list. Once you get my name in your contact list and I get yours in my own list, please do the following thing:
- Double click at damtrungphan (with the green tick which means that my computer is set on line but it does not mean that I might be at the computer at that moment), you’ll hear the telephone ringing voice through the speakers, and you also see the message “Calling damtrungphan ringing”. Now you are phoning me and if I am in front of my computer and with my speakers turned on, I should hear your call – I then will click at the GREEN TELEPHONE SIGN, then you and I are connected and we can talk to each other as long as we want.
- If you don’t hear my voice or I cannot hear your voice, it means that your equipments are not connected or functioning properly. Check them by reconnecting the microphone and speaker/headphone wires.

When you want to disconnect the SKYPE Internet phone line, just click at the RED TELEPHONE SIGN.


(NOTES: If you have 2 different PC’s or laptops at home, you can install Skype software to both of them by following all of the above steps; each computer should have a different code name. You can use one computer to call the other one and you can do all the testing by yourself. That was the way I successfully tested my systems, all by myself.)
